The Benton MacKaye Trail Association

The Benton MacKaye Trail Association (BMTA) is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization dedicated to ensuring the Benton MacKaye Trail (BMT) remains accessible and well-maintained.

Spanning nearly 300 miles (480 km) through the Appalachian Mountains of Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina, the BMT offers hikers a scenic and immersive outdoor experience.


The BMTA focuses on trail maintenance, conservation efforts, outreach, communication, and organizing sponsored hikes for the public. With over 500 members, the organization is united by a passion for the outdoors and a shared mission to preserve and protect the Benton MacKaye Trail, ensuring it remains “a footpath for generations to follow.”


The BMTA maintains this trail in collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Park Service, ensuring it remains a treasured resource for outdoor enthusiasts.
